Trail Hunter Takes the Lead: The 2024 Toyota Tacoma’s Off-Road Triumph at the Texas Truck Rodeo

The Texas Truck Rodeo is more than just an event; it’s a battlefield for trucks. Hosted by the Texas Auto Writers Association at Eagle’s Canyon Raceway, this rugged off-road testing ground challenges trucks to prove their worth. The all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter stole the spotlight, aiming to set a new standard for overlanding. With the midsize truck market on fire, how does this new Tacoma trim measure up?

The Tacoma Trailhunter: A New Standard in Midsize Trucks

The midsize truck market is more competitive than ever. Chevrolet’s Colorado, GMC’s Canyon, Ford’s Ranger, and Nissan’s Frontier all have new redesigns. Now, Toyota enters the fray with the 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter, a dedicated overlanding trim that slots above the TRD Off-Road Pro. The Trailhunter is more than just a badge—it’s a purpose-built machine designed to conquer trails.

Built to Conquer the Trails

The 2.5-inch lift on the Trailhunter immediately stands out. Thanks to Old Man Emu suspension with monotube shocks, this lift increases ground clearance and improves approach and departure angles, enhancing off-road performance. The 18-inch bronze wheels, paired with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires, ensure traction and durability on any terrain. While some may prefer 35-inch tires, the 33-inch Wranglers offer an excellent balance for trail use.

Bold Design with Practicality

The front design of the Tacoma Trailhunter blends style with off-road capability. Full LED headlights and rugged fender flares make a statement, while the Toyota Heritage badge in copper adds a unique touch. For those night adventures, a built-in LED light bar and high-intensity rigid LED fog lamps provide excellent visibility.

However, the non-functional vent on the grille is a small drawback. Unlike the larger Tundra, where this vent is active, it could have added functionality to the Trailhunter.

Power & Performance: I-FORCE MAX Hybrid

Under the hood, the Trailhunter boasts Toyota’s I-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. The 2.4L turbocharged inline-four hybrid engine generates 326 horsepower, leading the midsize truck segment. This powertrain balances fuel efficiency with torque, making it perfect for off-road and on-road use. The addition of a factory-installed snorkel—reversed to avoid water intake—is a smart design choice, further enhancing its off-road capabilities.

Interior Comfort & Technology

Inside, the Trailhunter offers a blend of comfort and ruggedness. The cabin features two-tone gray materials with orange stitching, exclusive to this trim. Trailhunter badges on the doors and dashboard reinforce its distinct identity. A massive 14-inch infotainment system sits at the center, providing access to navigation, entertainment, and truck settings.

Practicality is also key. Dual climate controls, drive mode selectors, and switches to control the rear differential and stabilizer bars are all within easy reach. And for those who love music, a removable JBL Bluetooth speaker can be taken to your campsite, adding to the overlanding experience.

Bed Features & Overlanding Utility

The composite bed of the Trailhunter is durable, scratch-resistant, and corrosion-proof. Adjustable tie-downs make cargo securing easy, while the built-in air compressor is a must-have for off-roaders. Air down your tires on the trail and inflate them before hitting the road home.

Toyota has also partnered with ARB to provide accessories like frame sliders, bed racks, and steel bumpers. These features add protection and allow for further customization. With 7,000 lbs of towing capacity, the Trailhunter is ready to haul gear, trailers, and more.

On-Road & Off-Road Impressions

Driving the Trailhunter is a pleasure for any off-road enthusiast. Visibility is excellent thanks to the elevated hood, providing clear sightlines over obstacles. The Old Man Emu suspension delivers smooth handling over rough terrain, while the truck’s power is evident in every acceleration.

When compared to competitors like the Ford Ranger TremorChevy Colorado ZR2, and GMC Canyon AT4, the Trailhunter stands out. Its hybrid powertrain, factory-installed snorkel, and thoughtful design features make it ready to hit the trails without the need for aftermarket upgrades.

Is the Trailhunter the Ultimate Overlander?

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter aims to set a new benchmark in the midsize truck market. With its off-road features, practical accessories, and comfort-focused cabin, it’s a compelling choice for overlanders and off-roaders alike. While pricing is yet to be released, Toyota promises a truck that’s ready for any adventure.

But is the Trailhunter the best choice over the Ranger, Canyon, or Colorado? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
